Along the way, other features of Calvin’s theology will be explored, including a pneumatic ecclesiology and his so-called “two-voice” theory. Ultimately, it will be demonstrated that an ontology of preaching can be offered via Calvin’s theology which does not revert to a “being-in-becoming” of the Word. The disclosure of this conceptual link opens into the constructive portion of the paper, which explores the question of how the word of the preacher can be in actuality the Word of God. It also reveals that Calvin expected the reign of Christ to be extended in the earth through the “pure” preaching of the gospel, and that there is an ontological link in Calvin’s thinking between the sermon and the Word.
